In a report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2017 was the costliest year on record for natural disasters in the United States with $306 billion in damages through 16 different natural disasters ranging from major hurricanes, floods, to wildfires.

Hurricane Harvey, however, accounted for over one-third of those damages, clocking in at over $125 billion dollars when the hurricane hit the Texas coast in late August.

The 16 natural disasters recorded by NOAA were the following:

  • 1 freeze;

  • 1 drought (affected multiple areas);

  • 1 wildfire (affected multiple areas);

  • 2 floods;

  • 3 major hurricanes (Harvey, Irma and Maria); and

  • 8 severe storms.

Harvey’s $125 billion in damages is topped only by 2005’s historic Hurricane Katrina. Hurricanes Maria and Irma accounted for $90 billion and $50 billion respectively.
